San Francisco Construction Debris Rules
San Francisco expects construction and demolition debris to be recycled, not landfilled. If you are remodeling, building or demolishing, the way you sort and haul debris affects compliance. Here is what that means for a dumpster on your project.

Recycling and Diversion
C&D debris from San Francisco projects must be taken to a facility that processes and recycles it, and larger projects must document how much material was diverted from landfill. Wood, metal, concrete, drywall and cardboard are all recyclable when kept reasonably clean.
Sorting on Site
You do not have to sort everything, but a few habits make a big difference. Keep concrete, dirt and brick in a separate heavy-debris box. Keep trash, food waste and liquids out of construction loads. Flatten cardboard so it does not take up volume.
- Heavy debris (concrete, dirt, brick) in a 10 yard box
- Mixed C&D (wood, drywall, roofing) in a 20 or 40 yard box
- No paint, solvents or hazardous waste
Documenting Your Project
If your building permit requires diversion reporting, keep the disposal tickets for each haul. We can send them after every pickup so you have a complete record.

Yes. San Francisco requires C&D debris to go to approved facilities for recycling, and some projects must report diversion.
Avoid it. Concrete, dirt and brick should go in a separate heavy-debris container so they can be recycled and the load stays within weight limits.
